Fernando Alonso has tested a McLaren MP4-21 at the final session of the year today. In a suprise outing for the team, Alonso went out on track in plain white overalls and helmet in an unbranded McLaren Mercedes to acclimatise himself to Bridgestone tyres and get some running in the car before the new year.
The test came about after a late agreement between Alonso and his still current employer Renault. Alonso requested the test after initial attempts by the Woking team proved fruitless. Renault boss Flavio Briatore consented in the end, much to Fernando’s delight. Alonso shares a good relationship with Briatore, despite the Spaniard defecting Renault at the start of 2006 season to McLaren. Flavio said that after all Fernando had done for Renault he allowed Alonso to test before his contract expires on December 31st 2006.
We enjoy a very good relationship and considering his work and his fabulous achievements these past two years with the double world titles in 2005 and 2006, we decided to give him this opportunity. Flavio Briatore.
