Just a couple of days before the start of the 2007 Formula One season, Super Aguri have unveiled their car to the world amid the press at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit. As most teams were rushing around with last minute preparations, attention was focused on former F1 pilot Aguri Suzuki as he and his two drivers rolled the SA07 out of the garage and into full view.
Continuing from the teams amazing first season which, although didn’t see any points, saw the squad at the first race and proved the impossible can be achieved. A tenth place in the final race of the year has boosted the teams morale and this carried over the winter with some flashes of brilliance from new British driver Anthony Davidson. With the exciting end to 2006, the Japanese team are hoping to score their first point this year and make the big step into the mid-field.
We will be aiming for points from the opening race and my goal for the end of the season, which I think is a realistic one, is to have our cars in the middle of the grid. Aguri Suzuki
The team caused controversy during the off-season when both drivers appeared to be lapping the test circuits in a modified Honda RA106 – last years Honda chassis. Some team chiefs, notably Frank Williams, have exclaimed a dislikenment to this and have threatened to take legal action should the team race the car. Frank cites that the rules are clear on teams designing their own car, and claims that the Super Aguri is nothing more than a Honda in a different dress. While nothing further has been reported on this issue yet, you can bet a few Williams personnel were peering through the crowds to get a close look at the new Aguri.
