Ferrari have decided that despite concern of Kimi Raikkonen’s engine in the closing stages of the Australian Grand Prix, they will keep the the unit and run it through the Malaysian race on Sunday. The announcement came after the hype had been building all week, and stemmed from a rumour that the Finn had lost water in the final laps at Melbourne. However, Ferrari team boss Jean Todt has told reporters that the leak was very minor, and after doing some simulated runs at Sepang earlier in the week, are happy to continue. This will mean (for now, at least) that Raikkonen will get a fresh unit for the following race in Bahrain.
It is true in the last laps of the Australian Grand Prix, Kimi had a problem with a pipe and he lost some water – very little water. We did some more checks, then Kimi simulated the problems during the free testing here in Malaysia and nothing demonstrated that we should change our programme – which is to keep the same engine for Malaysia.
