Monaco: Quick Snippets

Ferrari - 2007 Monaco Grand PrixWith Friday’s practice being moved to Thursday at Monaco, Formula One saw action today on the famous streets. The lap times of each driver will follow later today, but for now here are a few quick snippets of news following on from a busy morning in Monte Carlo.

Ferrari have decided to run with full-tobacco branding on their F2007 this weekend. While France has strict regulations on cigarette advertising, neighbouring Monte Carlo does not. Thus, Ferrari title-sponsor Marlboro are making their presence known in the Principality with the logos all over the place. It has also been reported that Ferrari have changed the colour of their cars ever so slightly. Instead of running a more orangey-red colour, the Italian team have returned to a deeper red that is more closely matched with the marques traditional shade.

Giancarlo Fisichella became the first casualty of Monaco’s tight and unforgiving circuit earlier today. In the fading moments of the first free practice session, the Italian driver clipped a kerb on the inside of the first corner – Ste Devote – and ploughed on into the barrier on the outside of the corner. Fisichella was not injured, but his Renault now looks a little different. The resulting waved yellow flags meant Fernando Alonso’s fastest lap could not be challenged, and the reigning world champion remained at the top of the timing sheet this morning.

McLaren have added a bit of bling to their drivers helmets, getting the phrase ‘Monaco 07’ spelled out in diamonds on both Fernando Alonso’s and Lewis Hamilton’s lids. In conjunction with the teams sponsor Steinmetz, McLaren are adding a little more dazzle and flare to their normally cold and calculated appearance.
