From the 2009 Australian Grand Prix, here we have the annual Formula One class photo, showing each of the drivers taking part at the start of the season. Amazingly given the circumstances, there are twenty drivers present, but already we can see the effects cost-cutting is having on the sport; only Ferrari, McLaren and Renault can afford sunglasses.

Is it me or did the cameraman, for once, manage to get the “family photo” taken at a point where everyone was looking at the camera? Usually there’s at least one driver looking the wrong way (usually at his team-mate or towards the ground).

The reason for it is that there are just as many photographers on the other side of the what we see as there are drivers, all shouting “over here!”. I’m not entirely certain of the protocol, but I think that perhaps one-at-a-time might be a better way to do it. Or just take one photo by the official FIA/FOM photographer (probably doesn’t exist) and distribute it as the one and only official image. Or, we could get Bernie to get an artist to do a cartoon version like how he does for his Christmas cards. 🙂

Quite. It would certainly be a lot more sensible.
Or they could have the official shot and then let the journalistic masses get their take. It would be a bit like the photos in my sixth form yearbook – first the official, very tidy and straight picture was taken by a hired professional photographer, then there’d be a short session where everyone was encouraged to be a little silly for the unofficial cameras (including a handful of students’ cameras).
