Mercedes today unveiled the SL63 as the official 2008 safety car and the C63 Estate as the medical car. Both cars have been developed by AMG and the Performance Studio and will be present at all races to assist the safety of the drivers. And once again, Bernd Maylander will be at the helm should the need arise during a race. The modifications made to the models are quite lengthy, but needless to say the cars are generally faster than their road-going counterparts thanks to weight savings and a professional driver behind the wheel.
The SL63 is powered by a 6.3 litre V8 which produces 525bhp and can get up to 62mph in 4.6s. This is pretty much the same as the road-going version, but AMG have managed to shed a huge 220kg from the weight and updated many of the cooling systems and added heavy-duty composite brakes. Unfortunately for Bernd though, he can’t put the roof down as AMG have fixed it in place, enabling AMG to remove the heavy mechanism completely.
