Valencia 2009: Fantasy Racers Update

The worse performance in the Fantasy Racers competition yet, I believe. None of my teams broke out of the 500 points mark and BlogF1 Racing were thrashed by Inner Pickle Racing, the latter claiming 65 more points than the former. The failure to check up on what was happening in the build-up to the European Grand Prix meant that all the teams suffered and the only thing possible to take away from the weekend is the fact I didn’t spend around £8m on Luca Badoer.

There really is little more to be said. Other than BF1R is in 131st in the Sidepodcast League.

Fantasy Racers is a fantasy Formula One competition. It is free to sign up but if you wish to have more than team you will need to make a donation to the site. You can also join private leagues, and currently BlogF1’s set of squads race in the Sidepodcast League.

  • Sorry to pick a bone with your piece, but:

None of my teams broke out of the 500 points mark

isn’t strictly true. BlogF1 Racing scored 501 points, Blogger’s Racing scored 515 points and Inner Pickle Racing got 566.

Moving on to my own Fantasy Racers results, only one of my teams (LCM Dragons) broke the 500 points barrier – that team was basically rescued by having both Button and Rosberg, supported by three mid-grid drivers who finished. One of them managed to score only 241 points despite not featuring Badoer (LCM Caro consisted of Button, Vettel and $8.8m change).

  • None of my teams broke out of the 500 points mark

Whoops, my poor language strikes again. I was trying to say something like broke out of the 500 mark and into the 600 mark.

  • I’ve had a strange fantasy racers weekend.

In the time between the last race and this I’d gone through the “schumacher for just 8 mil? Thats less than raikonen! Surely thats gotta be worth a punt… Ahhh oh no! sell sell sell before the value drops!” performance, at the expense of button.

I looked at free practice on Friday, and didn’t like the look of the red bulls (right on that one), very much liked the look of barichello (woohoo!) and slightly less correctly didn’t like the look of the maclarens (whoops).

As a result, I dropped Webber and Kovalainen, and brought in barichello and button. (if rubens is doing well then theres always a chance jenson will creep up from nowhere and beat him) I still had Rosberg (who tends to score a little above his value consistently), nakajima (who is cheap and does fairly often finish in the top 10, which is only a few points less than 8th) and alonso (I was expecting an on-fumes pole lap).

I also had kubica (all I can afford with leftover budget, and I actually got a good BMW vibe on friday… They looked better than normal) and trulli (I’d forgotten about monaco)

So… Come race results, I was rather worried: I’d dropped kovalainen who had done very nicely indeed, I had nakajima who’d had a disaster, and after seeing the toyotas on saturday and remembering monaco I was feeling a little silly!

I logged on to fantasy racers last night, bracing myself with a plummet down the table, only to find out that I’d had my 3rd best individual race result, getting the 55th best race score! Thats a healthy looking 785 points, taking me to 100th in the overall league (my best position yet) and 20th in the sidepodcast league.

I think I’ve found a suitable rival, too: In the way racing is currently 3 places (in the sidepodcast league) above off the pace racing, run by “Andrew D”.
