Less than 24 hours prior to the appeal hearing into the Hungarian Grand Prix debacle, penalised team McLaren have decided to drop the fight and accept they have lost the fifteen points that the drivers earned from the win and fourth placed finishes. The news comes after the team were thrown out of the 2007 constructors championship, but having the points reinstated could have reduced their monetary fine considerably.
The team deliberated right up until Tuesday, the day before the meeting was due to commence at the FIA headquarters in Paris. McLaren team principal, Ron Dennis, stated after the fateful hearing on the 13th that saw his team disqualified, that he would do whatever possible to seek closure on the matter. And so it appears that for the better of the sport, possibly his team and maybe the fans, McLaren have foregone any battle with the FIA and will allow the issue to die quietly. Although that in itself may take a fair amount of time, given all that has happened this year.
McLaren have notified the International Court of Appeal this morning that they wish to withdraw their appeal against the decision of the Stewards. Excerpt of FIA Press Statement.
