Ferrari F2008: Launch & Photos

Today at Maranello, Ferrari launched their 2008 challenger, the F2008 and the 54th they’ve built. The car is completely new and will attempt to retain the constructors trophy the team won last year with the F2007, and also propel one of their drivers to the crown. Inside the walls at Maranello, the car has been codenamed 659 and to comply with new regulations, has no driver aids.

Designed by Aldo Costa, the F2008 is once again a stunning example of Formula One machinery. I praised last years model for returning to good, classic looks, and part-way through 2007 Ferrari even reverted to a colour more closer to traditional Rosso Corsa. Although Ferrari did not throw a glitzy party for the launch of the ’08 car, instead just inviting a few journalists to the factory, offering free espresso and passing a few photos ’round. However, championships aren’t won at the unveiling, so fair enough on that point. But it would still have been nice to report on some over the top extravagance similar to McLaren in Valencia last year.

The new car is due to roll out on circuit at Fiorano on Monday for initial shakedown testing.

  • The additional aero parts do make it look messy, especially around the sidepods, but I still think it looks good considering most cars will be featuring these bits and bobs this year, just as they did last season.

  • For me an F1 car should always look good from a side-on view and while this one does, it’s nothing spectacular in my view.

But from head-on and from above it really is lovely!!

The front wing is pretty funky looking – time will tell if the extra bits and bobs actually do help or not though…

  • it does look mean from the top view … if the car looks messy with all those aero bits and pieces, imagine how it will look ater the whole season of aero development … hopefully the 2009 aero rule will remove or at least limit some of those aero add-ons
